Movie Recommendations

I am so far behind in watching movies, I don't even have a list anymore. I used to be such a film nerd, but I think I'm in the remedial class now. When I looked at new releases I didn't see anything, or I'm so far out of the loop, I don't know which ones I'd like.

This is where I'm pleading for your help. I need recommendations. The only caveat is no action movies and no romantic comedies. I prefer character-driven movies but am up for pretty much anything.

Just assume I haven't seen it and assume my video store (within walking distance!) has it. It's nearly warehouse sized and they've been in business since beta's and have kept nearly everything they ever purchased.

At the end of every year I do a self-regarding blog entry of "awards" including my my top 10 films of the last year. So I guess if I put down last year's results that can count as "recommendations" right?

Shooting Dogs, New York Doll, Little Children, Brick, Cache/Hidden, The Squid And The Whale, Little Miss Sunshine, C.R.A.Z.Y., Grizzly Man, Capote

(Please don't respond to tell me that Little Miss Sunshine/Brick/The Squid And The Whale were over-rated stereotypical twee indie bollocks. Because I will stick my fingers in my ears and go "lah lah lah can't hear you" like the mature fully-actualised adult that I am...)

Thanks! I've jotted down several movies from your blog.

I'd totally forgotten how much I want to see Truman.

I love recc's and of course right now is the time when I can think of absolutely nothing! Tell me, what are your fave actors/genres/movies so far? That will help me to recc something suited to your tastes. I like just about everything except intense sci-fi and gorefests.

I love Diane Keaton, Sissy Spacek, and Jessica Lange. For men, I like Daniel Day-Lewis, Joaquin Phoenix, Johnny Depp, Tommy Lee Jones, Alan Arkin, Martin Landau, and John Malkovich (cuz he's a homeboy from Benton, IL).

I like indie films, but even they are getting cliched. I like character-driven stuff rather than plot-driven, just in general.

Favorite Movies: Waiting for Guffman, Coal Miner's Daughter, Amadeus, The Fisher King, Zelig, A River Runs Through It, The Children's Hour, Forrest Gump, Philadelphia, Good Will Hunting, Amadeus, The Big Chill, Ordinary People, Stand By Me, the John Hughes movies, and I can't think of anymore.

*I'm the only person I know that was never interested in Star Wars. I was a little kid when it came out and didn't like it then and still don't even after having seen it as an adult.

*I had absolutely no interest in seeing Titanic. I still haven't seen it.

Well you can add another person to that. I've seen all of 2 Star Wars films all the way through - one to see what it was like because it was on at Christmas, and one because someone wanted to watch it as part of a birthday celebration and I was MADE to.

Neither occasion disputed my original impression that they were going to be utter bollocks.

I kept meaning to reccomnd Eve's Bayou to you, i think you would really like it. If you like older Woody Allen movies you would probably like Love and Death a lot. And if you like classics them Mildred Pierce is really good. Oh, and I'm sorry but Squid and the Whale? Yuck! Sorry, but it had to be said.

Eve's Bayou! Thanks, see you just jogged my memory. I distinctly remember wanting to see that, then it fell off my memory's radar, like so much else. I've seen Love and Death, but it's been so long, it'll be brand new all over again.

Mildred Pierce, *ding*ding*ding* is the winner for today! I Think I'll rent that when we get back from seeing the Simpson's tonight.
